Hillcrest Church

Change of Plan: Originally, there was no thought of utilizing existing undeveloped space for more than main floor use. However, a growing church family underscored the need for more space, combined with a secure and controlled traffic management plan. Doubling available floor space by adding a fully functioning second-floor level seemed to be the only option. Renovation Design challenges were to incorporate a second story addition, in a building structure designed for single-story use. An extra high ceiling provided the stroke of luck needed, and the height for the second-floor construction space. Foundation support for the upper floor was needed, resulting in considerable floor slab demolition. A full capacity passenger elevator and upper floor washroom rounded out the additions. An open area central upper balcony connecting all rooms, along with and freely accessible stairwell function as an unrestricted and attractive space under full-sized ceiling skylights.

Design Challenges:

  • This addition and renovation had to be completed while the business remained open. Accommodation included safe access, clean presentation, and respecting each of the clients engaging our customer.

  • The existing roof structure needed upgrading to accommodate added snow load, and connection to a new and higher structure.

  • Accommodate difficult interior connecting corridors into an attractive and functional Lobby traffic flow.

  • Upgrade the existing appearance into an attractive and welcoming street appearance.
